AFK Today 6/16/2023

I hope everyone’s Fridays are amazing! This week on AFK Today, we’re discussing the love/hate relationship between Twitch and its streamers. The Federal Trade Commission has blocked the Activision-Microsoft merger so come check out what we got to say about it. Lastly, say goodbye to Xbox One games as Xbox has actively stopped development on Xbox One titles but will continue to support it for the time being. Catch y'all in the next one, peace!

Twitch Streamers Love/Hate Twitch

Many of the top streamers on Twitch have been voicing their outrage over the changes Twitch will implement to reduce how embedded ads can be used during live streams. Some were even saying they would stop streaming on Twitch if the changes followed through. In response to the crazy bad PR, Twitch has announced the release of the Partner Plus program. This will allow streamers who make certain subscriber counts per month to go from a 50/50 payout split to a 70/30 in favor of the streamer. However, larger streamers who make more than $100,000 a year will be forced to go back to the 50/50 split after reaching that amount. While some of this seems to be a PR boost from what we have seen, it is still a strategy to increase Twitch’s long-term economic stability, and may not go over well with larger streamers.

Activision-Blizzard Merger Blocked by FTC

The Federal Trade Commision will be setting the massive Microsoft merger back even further after winning a temporary restraining order denying any future deal until all of the FTC’s legal proceedings are completed. Certainly a major setback for both corporations, and could take years for the deal to be completed or completely blocked indefinitely. What do you think about this FTC blockage? Could this drive Activision-Blizzard further into failure or force them to clean up their act? See more about the merger on PCGamer here.

Microsoft Ends Xbox One Game Production

A generation comes to an end as Microsoft is moving on from their Xbox One console. Xbox Game Studios is now shifting their focus forward to gen 9 while first-party games will no longer be created for the previous gen. Microsoft stated they will continue to support Xbox One hardware and games on previous generations but no internal studios will be dedicating time to Xbox One game development. Maybe this is a good sign for some of us as we wait for some sort of new Xbox exclusivity. Find out more information here.
